Evidence of thermal disequilibrium in contact binaries

We present a test which is sufficient to disprove thermal equilibrium in observed contact binaries. The test is applied to a number of systems with good spectroscopic data. All of them are shown to be in thermal imbalance. Accordingly, many (possibly all) contact binaries evolve on a thermal time-scale, probably in thermal cycles as proposed by Lucy (1976) and Flannery (1976).

Effects of thermal gradients on total internal reflection corner cubes.

Uncoated corner cube retroreflectors (CCRs) operating via total internal reflection (TIR) are less susceptible to internal heating than their metal-coated analogs, lacking an absorber on the rear surface. Even so, environments that induce differential heating within the CCR will result in thermal lensing of the incident wavefront, introducing aberrations that will generally reduce the central i...

Paradoxical Reflection in Quantum Mechanics

This article concerns a phenomenon of elementary quantum mechanics that is quite counter-intuitive, very non-classical, and apparently not widely known: a quantum particle can get reflected at a potential step downwards. In contrast, classical particles get reflected only at upward steps. As a consequence, a quantum particle can be trapped for a long time (though not forever) in a region surrou...

Observation of quantum turbulence in superfluid He-B using reflection and transmission of ballistic thermal excitations

We report measurements of quantum turbulence generated by a vibrating grid in superfluid HeB at zero pressure in the zero temperature limit. Superfluid flow around individual vortex lines Andreev-reflects incoming thermal ballistic quasiparticle excitations, and allows non-invasive detection of quantum vortices in He-B. We have compared two Andreev reflection-based techniques traditionally used...

Thermal enhancement of interference effects in quantum point contacts.

We study an electron interferometer formed with a quantum point contact and a scanning probe tip in a two-dimensional electron gas. The images giving the conductance as a function of the tip position exhibit fringes spaced by half the Fermi wavelength. For a contact opened at the edges of a quantized conductance plateau, the fringes are enhanced as the temperature T increases and can persist be...
